Nature, purpose, and duration of the research

In this project we will explore new ways of delivering mental health support emphasising the role of self-care, giving young people autonomy in recognising and managing their own mental wellbeing. Advances in mobile technologies provide the potential to assess young people’s mental wellbeing from their smartphone data, based on their activity and social interactions. We will characterise the activities and personality profiles of young people using our app and recommend personalised activities to improve mental wellbeing. The study duration is 18 months.

What data is collected from my phone and why do you collect it?

The app collects the following data from your phone.

· Step count – This data helps us to estimate your movement levels and understand the relationship between daily physical activity and mental health.  This app integrates with the health app (HealthKit) to get the 'step count' data in order to do further data analysis to build the mental profile.

· Location – Your location when you use the app. This will help us understand the relationship between how far and how much you move around geographically and your mental health.

Procedures, risks, and benefits to the participants

The study participants are to use the app for a few minutes every day for a few weeks. There is no risk to the participants. Participants may not directly benefit from this study, although it is anticipated that evaluation of the data collected will benefit individuals with a range of mental disorders in the future. The information collected in the database will lead to a better understanding of the future patient groups. Participants will not receive any payments or reimbursements specifically for taking part in this study. The app will also signpost to numerous mental health services including but not limited to Samaritans, SHOUT and NHS 111.

The information that we request will be retained by us and used as described in this privacy policy.

Confidentiality and handling of data (including any sharing with third parties)

The data will not be shared with any third party. Data collected from the participant will be recorded under the participant's unique app identifier only and not any personally identifiable data of the participant. The data from the watch will be sent securely via HTTPS to a secure digital storage platform (maintained by the Imperial College London) where the data will be securely processed.
